Kahalu'u Beach Park Less Than Half Full

With these economic times, there are less visitors using our beaches. I went snorkeling at Kahalu'u Bay with the place less than half full, like there were plenty of parking spaces to park your car.
So a good time to enjoy our beaches is on a non-cruise ship day.

Early in the morning the Green Sea Turtles share the water with the swimmers and boogie boarders at Magic Sands Beach.

The Curse of Lono Mini-Tour Continues...

I ran into PonchoMan continuing his Curse of Lono Mini-Tour, inching his way down Ali'i Drive.
This time PonchoMan was with his guitar player, jamming away at Kanaka Kava.

"In these tough economic times, you got to hustle as much as possible to survive," PonchoMan said to me.

Many Hawaiian Musicians Are Out Of Work

I remember a couple years ago when Tut use to be playing bass in two different bands, with Clyde and Jamison, and also with his family group, Aloha Aina. He was performing 6 nights a week at the Outrigger Keauhou Beach Resort Veranda Bar.
I would see Tut either up on stage, or sitting at the bar, and always willing to say hello and to buy me a drink. This was his life which he enjoyed, and being diabetic and having to be hooked up to a machine to clean his blood three times a week, being at the bar was what he looked forward to every day.

Now, Tut only performs one evening per week, if he's lucky. The rest of the time he's at home, watching television, without much money.

The Capt. Bean Boat No Longer in Kona, Hawaii

The Capt. Bean Boat is no longer in the Kailua Bay. My sources tell me that the owners, Roberts of Hawaii, has moved the vessel to Oahu in hopes of trying to sell the craft.
We miss the Capt. Beans' Polynesian Cruises sailing up and down the Kona coastline, rockin' and dancing away.

The Kona Sunsets of Yesterday

I was talking to lifetime local Sean "Peaman" Pagett about how we use to have beautiful Kona sunsets before the increase of the vog.
Everyone use to take the time to stop what they were doing here in West Hawaii to view the sunset, hoping for a green flash just as the sun disappeared into the ocean.
Now often its just all grey skies at sunset.

Its interesting to note that the Honolulu television stations are now referring to it as "haze."
ie: "Its going to be hazy conditions along Kona on the Big Island."

I miss the old Kona sunsets, the ones they use to write Hawaiian songs about.

Trick or Treat Babies

Aunty Lei, of The Ladies of Kona, is going to be 72 years old on this year's Halloween. (Or is she going to be 73 this year?)

Hawaiian falsetto singer Aunty Genoa Keawe, who passed away a few years ago, was a Halloween baby, and and so is Gabby, one of our favorite teenagers.

The Passing of Local West Hawaii Icons

I believe the zebra at the Three Ring Ranch in Kailua-Kona has passed away.
And so has the free paper, "The Hawaii Island Journal." After some months of competition with the newer free paper, "The Big Island Weekly," the Island Journal is no where to be found.

Ford Ironman World Championship 2008 Winners

Chrissie Wellington from the U.K. won for the second year in a row, even after surviving a flat tire on the bike, with a total time of 9 hours, and 6 minutes. (Some 11 minutes slower than the women's record - about the length of her flat tire breakdown.

Aussie Craig Alexander won for the men's division with a total time of 8 hours, 17 minutes.

I asked Craig if he had any blisters, and he said "Not a one."
(I have 2 big blisters on the bottoms of my feet from running around in my Teva sandals.)

Ironman 08 Gears Up in Kona Hawaii

The athletes clutter the Kailua Pier during their morning practice, increasing in numbers daily leading up to this Saturday.

The Ironman Parade of Nations went through Kailua Village on Tuesday evening, marking the official opening of the Ironman Village.

Six time winner Natascha Badmann mentioned to us that she is still recovering from her bike accident from last year's Ironman race. So expect her just to take it easy and to have fun, that is if anyone can have fun swimming 2.4 miles, biking 112 miles, and run 26.2 miles.

Some of the old faces returned again, former Ironman winner Mark Allen, and the 20 time participant from Brazil.

Ironman Underpants Run 2008

Tom Knoll, one of the very first Ironman with couple of the announcers.

As a protest statement against the Europeans wearing their Speedo's in Kona's supermarkets and stores, the annual Underpants Run continues to grow in the numbers of participants.
